The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has begun releasing revised textbooks for Class 9 students for the 2026-27 academic session, marking another stage in the transition towards the updated school curriculum.
The new Class 9 Mathematics textbook became available from September 21, while the revised Social Science textbook is scheduled to become available from September 30. The textbooks are being introduced as part of the broader curriculum changes associated with the National Education Policy 2020.
The revised books are intended to align Class 9 learning materials with the updated curriculum framework being introduced by NCERT.
The Mathematics textbook is titled “Ganita Manjari” and forms part of the revised learning resources being introduced for the academic year.
The Social Science textbook, titled “Understanding Society: India & Beyond – Part 2”, is scheduled for release at the end of September. NCERT’s phased release means schools and students will receive different subjects according to the publication schedule.
The textbook changes are significant because Class 9 represents the beginning of secondary-level schooling under the CBSE framework. Changes to the curriculum at this stage can affect classroom planning, teaching resources, assessment patterns and student preparation for subsequent board classes.
The revised materials are part of a broader effort to update school education following the National Curriculum Framework for School Education.
For students, the arrival of new textbooks means that schools may need to adjust lesson plans, assignments and assessment material to reflect the revised content.
Teachers will also have to familiarise themselves with the structure and learning objectives of the new books. This is particularly relevant where chapters, sequencing, activities or assessment approaches differ from previous editions.
The Social Science textbook is receiving particular attention because its release follows the Mathematics textbook rather than arriving simultaneously.
Students and parents should therefore verify which textbook edition their school has prescribed before purchasing books from online or offline sellers.
The transition also creates a practical challenge for schools because supplementary resources such as worksheets, question banks and reference material may initially continue to reflect the previous curriculum.
NCERT textbooks remain important reference materials for students studying under the CBSE system and are also widely used by learners preparing for competitive examinations.
The revised Class 9 books are therefore relevant beyond classroom teaching. They provide an indication of how the updated curriculum is being translated into actual learning material.
The release also comes as CBSE continues to implement changes in its secondary-school framework. The board has separately issued guidance concerning its three-language policy for Classes IX and X, adding another layer of curriculum change for schools during the 2026-27 academic cycle.
For students entering Class 9, the transition means that preparation should be based on the prescribed 2026-27 textbooks rather than older editions.
Schools are also likely to provide additional guidance on chapter coverage, internal assessments and examination requirements as the academic year progresses.
The revised textbooks represent an important part of the broader curriculum transition underway in Indian school education.
