The Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) could see major changes in 2027, with authorities considering a shorter and more streamlined examination process for students.
The Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Testing Agency (NTA) are reportedly discussing changes that could reduce the number of subjects, shorten individual papers and introduce a new subject-grouping system. The proposed changes are aimed at reducing the number of examination days and making the test easier for students to manage.
CUET-UG 2027 May Move Towards a One-Day Exam
One of the key ideas being considered is a “one student, one day” examination model. Under the proposal, students taking multiple CUET papers could complete their examination on the same day instead of travelling to examination centres on several different dates.
This could be particularly useful for students who have to travel long distances to reach their examination centres. A shorter examination schedule could also reduce accommodation and travel expenses for students and their families.
At present, students can select up to five subjects in CUET-UG, with individual papers generally lasting 60 minutes. One proposal under discussion could reduce the maximum number of subjects to four. Authorities are also examining shorter papers and a revised grouping system based on commonly selected subject combinations.
Why Are CUET Changes Being Considered?
CUET-UG has become an important entrance route for undergraduate admissions at participating universities across India. However, students choosing several subjects may have to appear for examinations spread across multiple days.
The proposed changes are intended to make the examination process more compact and student-friendly. Fewer examination days could also help reduce pressure on testing infrastructure and make centre management easier.
The subject-grouping proposal could allow commonly selected combinations to be scheduled more efficiently. This could potentially reduce the number of separate examination sessions required for individual students.
Changes Are Not Final Yet
Students preparing for CUET-UG 2027 should not change their preparation strategy based only on these reports. The proposed changes have not yet been officially finalised by the NTA.
The final examination structure will depend on consultations involving the Ministry of Education, UGC, NTA and participating universities. Universities may also have specific subject requirements for admission to different undergraduate programmes.
Until an official notification is released, students should continue preparing according to the currently available academic requirements and keep checking official NTA announcements.
What Students Should Do Now
Students targeting CUET-UG 2027 should focus on completing their Class 12 syllabus, strengthening conceptual understanding and regularly practising objective-type questions.
They should also keep track of official announcements rather than relying entirely on social media posts or coaching-centre updates.
If the proposed changes are approved, CUET-UG 2027 could become shorter, more compact and easier to schedule. However, students should wait for the final NTA notification before making decisions about subject selection or examination planning.
