The Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate, or CUET-UG, could see major changes from 2027. Education authorities are considering a shorter and simpler exam structure to reduce the pressure on students and make the entrance process easier to manage.
The proposed changes include reducing the maximum number of subjects, shortening exam papers and changing the way subjects are grouped. The aim is to make it possible for students to complete their CUET-UG papers in a shorter period, with a possible one-day exam schedule being considered.
However, students should note that these are proposals and not final rules yet. The Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Testing Agency (NTA) are working on the changes, while universities will also have a role in deciding their admission requirements.
What could change in CUET-UG 2027?
One of the major proposals is to reduce the maximum number of subjects a student can take from five to four.
The examination papers could also become shorter. A new subject-grouping system is being considered to help students complete their tests more efficiently.
If implemented, these changes could reduce the total number of days required for CUET-UG. Students who currently need to travel multiple times for different papers could benefit from a shorter examination schedule.
Why is CUET being changed?
CUET-UG has become an important entrance route for undergraduate admissions at many universities. However, managing several subjects and examination days can be difficult for students.
Candidates may have to travel to examination centres, sometimes in different cities. A shorter examination schedule could reduce travel, accommodation and other costs.
It could also make the admission process less stressful for students who are preparing for board examinations and entrance tests at the same time.
What does this mean for DU aspirants?
Students planning to apply to the University of Delhi and other CUET-participating universities should not change their preparation strategy based only on these proposals.
The final CUET-UG 2027 structure has not been announced. Universities will also need to align their admission rules with any changes made to the entrance examination.
Students should therefore continue preparing according to the currently available academic requirements and wait for official NTA and university notifications before making major changes to their subject choices.
What should students do now?
Students preparing for CUET-UG 2027 should focus on their Class 12 syllabus, strengthen their basic concepts and regularly follow official announcements.
It is also important to understand the admission requirements of the universities and courses they want to apply for. Different universities and programmes may have different subject requirements.
The proposed CUET changes could make the examination shorter and easier to manage, but students should remember one important point: the final rules matter, not the proposals.
Once NTA releases the official CUET-UG 2027 information bulletin, students should carefully check the number of subjects, examination pattern, syllabus, eligibility rules and university-specific requirements.
For now, the possible changes signal an effort to make India’s undergraduate admission process more student-friendly.
