IISc Bengaluru to Host Seva First Innovation Challenge for Students Across 5 States and 3 UTs

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is set to host the Seva First Innovation Challenge, an initiative designed to encourage students and young innovators to identify problems in their communities and develop solutions that can potentially be tested and implemented.

The initiative will bring together participants from five southern states and three Union Territories. The participating regions include Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. Registration opens on September 25, 2026, and will remain open until October 24.

The challenge has been designed for students across different levels of education. School students from Classes 6 to 12 can participate in the Junior category, while students from Industrial Training Institutes and polytechnics will participate in a technical category focused on practical engineering and fabrication.

Undergraduate students, postgraduate students and research scholars will participate in the Open category, where they are expected to demonstrate prototypes or pilot projects with a credible pathway towards deployment.

The programme is structured around five national themes: Clean and Sustainable Bharat, Prosperous Farmers, Prosperous Bharat, Healthy and Inclusive Bharat, Educated and Skilled Bharat, and Secure Bharat.

The focus on real-world problems is a central feature of the initiative. Instead of limiting innovation to theoretical competitions, participants will be encouraged to identify challenges within their own communities and develop solutions that could eventually be tested in practical environments.

Participants will have access to academic and industry mentorship as well as laboratories, fabrication facilities and testing support. The programme will also provide incubation, seed and pilot funding, field-testing opportunities and guidance related to intellectual property protection.

Promising projects could potentially be connected with government ministries, state governments, urban and rural local bodies, public sector undertakings and industry for possible adoption.

The initiative is being organised jointly by the Union Education Ministry, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC), with IISc Bengaluru serving as the nodal institute.

The challenge reflects a growing emphasis on innovation-based learning in Indian education. Students are increasingly being encouraged to move beyond memorisation and develop problem-solving, technical and entrepreneurial capabilities.

For younger participants, the Junior category provides an opportunity to approach local problems through simple working solutions or service and governance ideas. Technical students can focus on engineering, electronics and fabrication, while higher-education participants are expected to develop more advanced prototypes or pilots.

The initiative will culminate in a National Finale in New Delhi scheduled for December 10 to 17, 2026.

The programme therefore creates a structured pathway from identifying a problem to developing, testing and potentially deploying a solution.

For schools, colleges and technical institutions, the challenge could also provide an opportunity to connect classroom learning with practical problem-solving.

With registration opening on September 25, students and institutions now have an opportunity to participate in an initiative that combines education, innovation, mentorship and potential real-world implementation.
