NCTE Issues Advisory for ITEP Admissions 2026–27; Only NCET 2026 Qualified Candidates Eligible

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has issued a fresh advisory clarifying that only candidates who appeared for the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) 2026 will be eligible for admission to the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) for the 2026–27 academic session. The directive applies to all NCTE-recognised institutions offering the four-year integrated teacher education programme across the country.

According to the advisory, institutions have been instructed not to admit students through any admission process other than NCET 2026. The move aims to standardise admissions, ensure transparency and maintain uniform academic standards for teacher education programmes nationwide.

The ITEP is a four-year integrated programme introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, combining a bachelor’s degree with professional teacher training. The programme is designed to prepare future educators through multidisciplinary learning, practical classroom exposure and competency-based teaching methods.

Education experts believe a common entrance examination improves the quality of teacher education by ensuring that all applicants are assessed through a single national standard. The NCET-based admission process is also expected to simplify applications and reduce inconsistencies across institutions.

NCTE has advised aspiring candidates to regularly check the admission schedules of participating institutions and keep all required documents, including the NCET 2026 scorecard, academic certificates and identity proof, ready for counselling and admission procedures. Institutions have also been directed to strictly follow the revised admission norms.

The advisory reinforces the government’s efforts to strengthen teacher education through a transparent and merit-based admission system. By making NCET mandatory for ITEP admissions, NCTE aims to improve the quality of future teachers and support the successful implementation of NEP 2020.
