IIT Bombay and SUNY Old Westbury Partner to Boost Engineering and AI Education

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has signed a strategic Letter of Intent with State University of New York at Old Westbury to strengthen collaboration in engineering education, artificial intelligence, research and innovation. The partnership aims to deepen academic cooperation between India and the United States while creating new opportunities for students, researchers and faculty members.

The collaboration will focus on joint research projects, faculty exchanges, student mobility programmes and curriculum development in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, data science and advanced engineering. Both institutions intend to leverage their academic strengths to promote innovation and interdisciplinary learning.

The initiative has been welcomed by Dharmendra Pradhan, who described it as a significant step towards strengthening India–US cooperation in higher education. According to the minister, global academic partnerships are essential for building world-class research ecosystems and preparing students for rapidly evolving technology-driven industries.

Education experts believe international collaborations help institutions enhance research quality, promote knowledge exchange and expose students to diverse academic environments. Joint programmes also encourage innovation by bringing together expertise from multiple countries to address global challenges.

The partnership is expected to create opportunities in areas including semiconductor technology, robotics, clean energy, digital transformation and advanced manufacturing. Students participating in collaborative initiatives will gain exposure to international research practices while developing skills relevant to the global workforce.

Faculty members from both institutions are also expected to engage in collaborative research, academic workshops and innovation-driven projects. Such exchanges can improve teaching methodologies, encourage interdisciplinary research and strengthen institutional capacity.

Industry leaders have welcomed the agreement, noting that stronger ties between higher education institutions can accelerate technological innovation and support workforce development. Global academic partnerships also enhance opportunities for startups, research commercialization and entrepreneurship.

The collaboration reflects India’s growing emphasis on internationalization of higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Policymakers continue to encourage partnerships with globally recognized universities to improve academic quality and strengthen India’s position as a global education hub.
