More than 3 lakh students have joined the Bihar Vidya Sathi app within about a month of its launch, with approximately 73% of users coming from rural areas, Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said during a review meeting of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB).
The figures were discussed at a review meeting held at the BSEB auditorium on September 23. The meeting examined the functioning of the board, examination arrangements, vocational education and measures related to students’ academic and career development. Education Department Secretary Rajiv Roshan and BSEB Chairman S. Thyagarajan were among the officials present.
Technology push in Bihar’s education system
The review meeting also focused on making examination processes more technology-based, transparent and secure. Officials discussed preparations to link students’ APAAR IDs with face identification and implement the system at examination centres.
The development comes as Bihar’s education authorities are examining ways to use digital systems across different parts of the student and examination journey.
The Vidya Sathi figures are particularly notable because the majority of the app’s users reported in the meeting were from rural areas. According to the minister, around 73% of the more than 3 lakh students connected with the platform are from rural locations.
Focus shifts towards vocational education
The meeting also covered vocational education and the need to align courses with employment opportunities and changing technology requirements.
Officials were asked to increase awareness among students about vocational education. The review also discussed replacing older trades and courses whose relevance has declined with more contemporary options.
Areas mentioned included animation designing, artificial intelligence, mobile repairing, robotics, electrical and electronics, along with other skill-based programmes.
Measures to reduce school dropouts
Another issue discussed was the continuation of education after Class 10.
Officials considered developing a strategy to connect students who discontinue their education after Class 10 with further education or skill training opportunities. The possibility of financial incentives to encourage students to continue their education was also discussed.
The meeting also discussed making admission to Simultala Residential School easier for talented students and promoting ITIs and industrial training as possible career pathways.
Examination reforms
The BSEB review also examined the timely declaration of results for computer-based tests. Officials discussed greater use of technology in examinations while maintaining processes intended to improve transparency and security.
The BSEB’s official website currently also lists online registration and examination-related notices for the 2027 secondary examination cycle.
