IIT Madras Launches ₹3.30 Crore Construction Robotics Lab With Bechtel India

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has inaugurated a ₹3.30-crore state-of-the-art robotics laboratory on its campus to advance research, innovation and industry applications in robotics, automation and construction technology.

The laboratory was inaugurated on September 22, 2026, and has been established with CSR support from Bechtel India Private Limited, a global engineering, construction, procurement and project-management company. The partnership is designed to connect academic research with practical requirements from the construction and infrastructure industries.

What will the new laboratory focus on?

The facility will focus on developing and testing technologies for construction and infrastructure applications. Research areas include construction robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies.

The laboratory will give students, researchers and industry engineers a shared environment to work on real-world construction challenges and develop technology solutions that can eventually be tested closer to field deployment.

The collaboration also covers joint research, consulting and technology development. Projects emerging from the partnership could lead to research publications, patents, prototypes and technology demonstrations for industry applications.

Students to get industry exposure

A major component of the initiative is its academic-industry integration.

Bechtel India will contribute industry perspectives to curriculum development and provide mentorship through its professionals. Internship opportunities at Bechtel offices will also be explored for selected students.

The programme is expected to give students, including master’s-level researchers, hands-on exposure to emerging robotics technologies and their applications in construction and advanced engineering.

Who is leading the collaboration?

The MoU was signed by Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean, Alumni and Corporate Relations, IIT Madras, along with IIT Madras faculty members Prof. T. Asokan and Prof. Koshy Varghese.

Bechtel India was represented by Raja Yeluri, Managing Director, and Ravi Tata, Robotics Manager. Prof. T. Asokan and Prof. Koshy Varghese will lead the laboratory from IIT Madras.

Long-term industry-academia partnership

The collaboration is structured as a longer-term partnership focused on moving research from laboratories toward practical construction applications. It is intended to support technology development, testing and demonstrations while strengthening the pipeline of professionals trained in robotics and automation.

For engineering students, the initiative creates an academic environment where construction technology is studied alongside actual industry requirements, linking classroom research with infrastructure-sector applications.
