Amaravati is set to become the home of India’s first dedicated university campus focused on Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, with the Andhra Pradesh government approving a ₹730.7 crore project to be developed by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), a Deemed-to-be University under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The proposed campus will be developed across 8.5 acres in Amaravati and is expected to be funded entirely through a grant-in-aid from MeitY over a five-year period. The project is designed to bring higher education, research, advanced technology training, innovation and entrepreneurship under one academic ecosystem, with a focus on technologies expected to play a growing role in India’s digital and industrial development.
Academic and advanced technology skill-development programmes are scheduled to begin from September 2026. Until the permanent campus is ready, the initial programmes will operate from a temporary facility at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur. The university is expected to offer programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and executive levels.
The proposed academic portfolio covers several emerging technology fields. These include Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication and Security, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, Semiconductor Fabrication, Chip Design, VLSI, Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging, Embedded Systems and High-Performance Computing. This gives the project a wider focus than a conventional AI-focused institution, linking software, computing, semiconductor technology and quantum research.
A major feature of the planned campus will be its Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block, which is expected to cover around 1.2 lakh square feet. The facility is planned to include infrastructure for quantum computing and communication, quantum photonics, quantum security, cryogenic systems and high-performance computing. It will also feature cleanrooms, nano-fabrication and semiconductor technology facilities, chip-design infrastructure, data centres and space for start-up incubation.
The project is also expected to create a sizeable pipeline of skilled professionals. Over five years, around 8,250 learners are expected to be trained, including about 1,650 students through formal degree programmes and around 6,600 through skilling and certification programmes. The annual learner intake is projected to reach about 3,913 by the fifth year.
Industry and academic partnerships are another part of the plan. NIELIT has proposed collaborations with institutions including IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University and JNTU institutions for academic programmes, research and technology development. The permanent campus is also planned to include smart classrooms, laboratories and a 500-bed residential facility.
The initiative follows an MoU signed between NIELIT and the Andhra Pradesh government in February 2026. The agreement identified Amaravati as a location for specialised degrees and certifications in Quantum and AI, while also providing for research collaboration, entrepreneurship, international partnerships and student and faculty exchanges.
For students, the project could create new academic routes into fields that are increasingly important to the technology sector. For Andhra Pradesh, it forms part of a broader effort to build Amaravati as a centre for quantum technology, artificial intelligence and deep-tech research.
