New AI Literacy Mission Aims to Bring Artificial Intelligence Education to Schools Across India

A new nationwide initiative is set to introduce structured artificial intelligence (AI) education in schools across India, helping students and teachers prepare for a future where AI is becoming part of everyday life. The HUMAIN AI Literacy Mission (HAILM) was recently launched with the goal of making AI learning simple, safe and accessible for schools across the country.

The programme will offer an age-appropriate AI curriculum for students from Classes 3 to 12. Instead of teaching only technical concepts, it will also focus on responsible AI use, ethics, critical thinking and digital safety. Students will learn how AI works, where it is used and how to use it wisely rather than depending on it blindly.

Teachers and school leaders will also receive dedicated training. The mission includes live online sessions, video lessons, classroom teaching material, interactive activities and a digital learning platform to help schools introduce AI smoothly. This aims to ensure that teachers remain confident in using new technology inside classrooms.

Education experts believe AI will become an important skill for future jobs across industries. By introducing AI at school level, students can begin developing problem-solving, creativity and digital skills much earlier. The programme has been designed to support different school boards and learning levels, making it easier for schools across India to participate.

Karnataka has introduced AI as a vocational subject in many government schools, while Punjab has announced AI as a mainstream subject across school education, showing that AI learning is becoming an important part of India’s education system.

Experts say early exposure to AI could help students become more prepared for future careers in technology, business, healthcare, finance and many other industries where AI is already changing the way people work. At the same time, teacher training and ethical learning are expected to ensure that technology supports education without replacing essential human skills.
