The University Grants Commission has cautioned higher education institutions against offering online or distance learning programmes without the necessary approvals, reiterating that such courses will be treated as invalid.
In a recent advisory, the commission said several institutions had been advertising or running programmes in online and open distance learning modes without recognition from the regulator. Students were urged to verify the approval status of institutions and courses before taking admission.
The UGC noted that only universities that have received formal recognition under its regulations are permitted to offer programmes through online or open distance learning modes. Any degree issued through unauthorised courses will not be recognised for higher education or employment purposes.
The commission also asked universities to strictly follow guidelines related to course structure, admission procedures and examination systems in online education. Institutions found violating the rules may face regulatory action.
The advisory comes as enrolment in online and distance learning programmes continues to grow, with regulators seeking to ensure quality standards and protect students from unrecognised degrees.
