Digital Academic Records Gain Momentum as APAAR Crosses 26 Crore Student IDs

India’s digital education ecosystem is expanding rapidly as the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) has crossed 26 crore verified student IDs, strengthening efforts to create a unified academic identity for learners across the country. The initiative is helping simplify academic record management, student mobility and credit transfers while supporting the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

APAAR, often referred to as the “One Nation, One Student ID”, provides every learner with a unique lifelong academic identity linked to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) and DigiLocker. The digital platform enables students to securely store and access their educational records while making it easier for institutions to verify academic credentials.

According to the Ministry of Education, more than 26 crore APAAR IDs have been generated across schools and higher education institutions. Over 110 crore academic records have also been uploaded to the digital ecosystem, allowing certificates, mark sheets, degrees and academic credits to be accessed and verified electronically.

One of the biggest advantages of the system is improved academic mobility. Students changing schools, colleges or universities no longer need to repeatedly submit physical documents. Institutions can digitally verify records, reducing paperwork, speeding up admissions and making student transfers more efficient.

The Academic Bank of Credits further supports flexible learning by allowing students to accumulate, transfer and redeem academic credits earned from recognised institutions. This enables multiple entry and exit options, making it easier for learners to continue their education after career breaks or transfers between institutions. The initiative aligns with NEP 2020’s vision of lifelong learning and greater academic flexibility.

Digital academic records are also expected to benefit employers and government agencies. Instead of manually verifying educational qualifications, organisations can access authenticated digital records, reducing fraud and improving the speed of recruitment and scholarship verification.

The initiative is particularly significant for students in remote areas. APAAR IDs can also be generated through Common Service Centres, helping extend digital education services to learners with limited access to educational institutions or digital infrastructure.

As India’s education system becomes increasingly digital, platforms such as APAAR, ABC, DigiLocker and the National Academic Depository are creating a connected ecosystem where academic achievements remain securely available throughout a learner’s life. The integrated system reduces administrative burden for institutions while improving transparency and efficiency across the education sector.

Education experts believe such digital infrastructure will become increasingly important as universities adopt flexible learning models, online education and multidisciplinary programmes. A unified academic identity can simplify student mobility, encourage continuous learning and make India’s education ecosystem more responsive to changing industry needs.

With millions of students already using the platform and institutions steadily joining the ecosystem, APAAR represents another milestone in India’s digital transformation of education. The initiative is expected to improve the student experience while creating a more transparent, paperless and learner-centric higher education system for the future.
