India’s higher education system is entering a new phase with the rollout of Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programmes (AEDPs), a reform designed to bridge the long standing gap between classroom learning and industry expectations. Introduced under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Guidelines 2025 and aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the initiative encourages universities and colleges to integrate structured apprenticeships into undergraduate degree courses.
The move comes at a time when employers increasingly seek graduates with practical experience alongside academic qualifications. Under the new framework, students can complete industry apprenticeships as an integral part of their degree while earning academic credits. The programme aims to make graduates job ready by exposing them to real workplace environments before they enter the employment market.
Unlike conventional internships, AEDPs are formally embedded within the curriculum. Students receive academic credits for workplace learning, and the apprenticeship becomes a recognised component of the degree transcript. Universities are required to establish formal partnerships with industries, ensuring that students gain relevant hands on experience aligned with their chosen discipline.
The UGC guidelines also support the National Credit Framework, allowing apprenticeship training to contribute towards a student’s overall academic progression. Multiple entry and exit options remain available under the programme, giving learners greater flexibility while preserving the academic value of their work based learning. Students completing these degrees remain eligible for postgraduate and doctoral studies, ensuring that employability does not come at the expense of academic progression.
Higher education experts believe the reform could significantly improve graduate outcomes across engineering, management, commerce, hospitality, media, healthcare and several emerging sectors. Many employers have often highlighted the shortage of graduates with practical workplace skills despite strong academic credentials. Apprenticeship based learning addresses this concern by exposing students to business operations, teamwork, project management and professional communication during their studies.
Industry participation will play a central role in the success of the initiative. The guidelines encourage companies to collaborate with higher education institutions by offering structured apprenticeship opportunities that meet national standards. Employers also benefit by identifying potential recruits early while reducing future training costs. This creates a stronger connection between universities and industry, a key objective of the National Education Policy.
The programme also supports India’s broader skill development agenda. As the country aims to become a global manufacturing, technology and innovation hub, creating a workforce equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise is becoming increasingly important. Apprenticeship embedded degrees could help narrow the employability gap while strengthening India’s competitiveness in global labour markets.
