Google Offers Indian College Students Free AI Plus for One Year, Adds JEE and NEET Study Tools

Google is giving eligible college students in India one year of its Google AI Plus plan free of charge, while introducing new AI-powered tools aimed at helping students prepare for exams, organise coursework and understand difficult subjects.

The offer is part of Google’s Back to School 2026 initiative, which brings new learning features to Google Search and Gemini. For Indian students, the update is particularly significant because it combines free access to AI tools with features designed around competitive examinations such as the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

Under the offer, eligible college students can access Google AI Plus for 12 months at no cost. The plan includes Gemini Omni, twice the standard Gemini usage limits and 400 GB of cloud storage.

Google has also added practice quizzes for several major examinations. In India, students preparing for JEE and NEET can generate practice quizzes through Google Search. The quizzes provide explanations for answers and links to additional resources, allowing students to identify areas where they need more preparation.

Google has partnered with education companies including The Princeton Review, Careers360 and PhysicsWallah to provide content for its practice quiz features.

Another major addition is study notebooks, which allow students to upload their own learning material, including lecture notes and presentations. Gemini can use these materials to create personalised study plans and quizzes.

The system can also assess a student’s understanding through diagnostic quizzes. Based on the results, it can identify gaps in knowledge and create shorter lessons and additional questions around those areas.

Students can also use the tools to work with their own academic material. Handwritten notes, lecture slides and other course documents can be turned into summaries of important concepts. The feature initially supports documents, presentations, spreadsheets and text files.

Google is also expanding interactive learning features. Students can use AI-powered explanations, simulations, images and interactive quizzes to explore concepts rather than relying only on conventional text-based answers.

The new tools come at a time when artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common in education. Students are already using AI for research, revision, writing and problem-solving, but educators have also raised questions about over-reliance on AI and whether technology actually improves understanding.

Google says its education-focused AI features are designed to support learning rather than simply provide answers. The company has placed greater emphasis on guided learning, personalised study and helping students identify gaps in their understanding.

For Indian students facing intense competition in entrance examinations, the combination of free AI access and exam-specific practice tools could make digital study resources more accessible.

However, the usefulness of these tools will ultimately depend on how students use them. AI can help organise revision, explain difficult concepts and generate practice questions, but it cannot replace sustained preparation, classroom teaching or independent thinking.

With AI now becoming part of everyday academic life, Google’s latest move signals how technology companies are increasingly positioning their tools not just as search or productivity products, but as part of the student learning process.
