IIT Patna Expands BTech Portfolio from 3 to 32 Programmes as Student Strength Surges

The Indian Institute of Technology Patna has significantly expanded its academic offerings, with the number of BTech programmes increasing from just three when the institute began operations in 2008 to 32 today.

The growth comes alongside a sharp rise in student numbers, faculty strength and campus infrastructure, reflecting IIT Patna’s expansion into a wider range of engineering and technology disciplines. The institute started in 2008 with 92 students at the Polytechnic College campus in Patliputra Colony. Its student strength has now reached 4,347.

IIT Patna’s academic portfolio has expanded steadily over the years. By 2016, the institute was offering five BTech and five MTech programmes. By 2020, the number of BTech programmes had increased to nine, alongside six MTech and three MSc programmes.

The current academic portfolio includes 32 BTech programmes, 15 MTech programmes and three MSc programmes. The expansion covers a broad range of engineering and technology areas, including Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

The institute’s growth has also been supported by an expansion of its physical infrastructure. According to IIT Patna’s registrar, the completion of Phase II infrastructure has helped the institute increase its capacity. The expansion has included hostels, classrooms, laboratories, mess facilities and sports infrastructure.

Faculty numbers have increased as well. IIT Patna had 46 faculty members when it began operations in 2008. By 2025, the figure had risen to 165, providing greater academic capacity as the institute added programmes and increased its student population.

The institute has also been developing links with management institutions. IIT Patna has a BTech-BS/MBA dual-degree arrangement involving IIM Mumbai and IIM Bodh Gaya. Under the arrangement with partner institutions, students can combine technical education with management studies, giving them an opportunity to build skills across both areas.

In July 2026, IIT Patna and IIM Bodh Gaya also formalised the operational framework for a five-year BTech and MBA dual-degree programme. The full-time residential programme has an intake of 60 students and follows a 3+2 structure. Students complete three years of BTech or BS study at IIT Patna before moving to IIM Bodh Gaya for two years of MBA education.

The expansion is significant for students because the growth of academic programmes gives engineering aspirants a wider choice beyond the traditional branches that have historically dominated technical education.

It also reflects a broader shift in higher education, with institutes expanding programmes to cover emerging areas while continuing to offer established engineering disciplines.

For IIT Patna, the next challenge will be maintaining academic quality while managing a much larger student population and a broader programme portfolio. The institute’s expansion shows how newer IITs are building capacity and developing a wider academic identity within India’s higher education system.
