IGNOU Introduces One-Year Master’s Route for Four-Year Degree Graduates

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new route that could make postgraduate education faster for some students. Graduates who have completed four-year undergraduate programmes can now pursue selected master’s programmes that can be completed in one year.

The move is linked to the growing use of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) in India. Under the new system, students who complete a four-year degree can move into selected postgraduate courses without following the traditional two-year master’s route. IGNOU has introduced nine one-year postgraduate options under this pathway.

The change could be useful for students who want to continue their education while entering the job market sooner. A shorter postgraduate route can reduce the time students spend away from full-time employment and may also help them gain specialised qualifications more quickly.

The initiative comes as Indian higher education continues to change under the National Education Policy 2020. The policy has encouraged more flexible degree structures, multiple entry and exit options and greater choice for students. FYUP is one of the major changes being adopted by universities as part of this wider reform.

IGNOU’s role is particularly important because of its large open and distance learning network. The university offers programmes to students who may not be able to attend traditional campus-based courses. The new master’s pathway could therefore give FYUP graduates another option for continuing their studies without necessarily spending another two full years on a postgraduate degree.

IGNOU’s July 2026 prospectus shows the university continues to offer a wide range of postgraduate programmes through its open and distance learning system. Many of its regular master’s programmes still have a minimum duration of two years, meaning the one-year route is a specific pathway for eligible graduates rather than a change to every master’s programme.

The development also reflects a wider shift in Indian higher education towards flexible learning. Students increasingly want courses that can fit around employment, professional training and other responsibilities. Shorter postgraduate routes can give learners more flexibility when planning their education and careers.

For universities, such programmes could also help connect undergraduate education more closely with specialised postgraduate study. Students completing a four-year degree may be able to move more quickly into a field that matches their career plans.
