UGC Launches Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programme to Boost Student Employability

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced new guidelines for Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programmes (AEDPs), enabling higher education institutions to integrate structured industry apprenticeships into undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace experience while improving students’ employability under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Under the framework, universities and colleges can collaborate with industry partners to offer apprenticeships as an integral component of academic programmes. Students will gain hands-on training, practical exposure and industry-relevant skills while continuing their formal education, allowing them to graduate with both academic qualifications and professional experience.

Education experts believe apprenticeship-integrated programmes can significantly enhance job readiness by exposing students to real-world work environments. Employers increasingly seek graduates who possess practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge, making industry-based learning an important part of modern higher education.

The guidelines encourage institutions to establish partnerships with companies across sectors such as manufacturing, information technology, healthcare, finance and emerging technologies.
