University of Liverpool Set to Welcome First Students at Bengaluru Campus This Year

The University of Liverpool is preparing to welcome its first students at its new Bengaluru campus, bringing a major British university into India’s growing international higher education market.

The campus has received formal approval from India’s University Grants Commission and is set to begin operations in August 2026. It will be the University of Liverpool’s first international campus and will offer Indian students the chance to study for a University of Liverpool degree without moving to the UK.

The Bengaluru campus is located at Alembic City, a development focused on education, research and innovation. The university says the campus has been designed around smart classrooms, research and innovation spaces, collaborative learning areas and specialised laboratories. Students will also have access to Bloomberg terminals for practical learning in areas such as finance.

The first group of courses covers subjects closely linked to India’s expanding technology and business sectors. Students can apply for undergraduate degrees in Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Biomedical Sciences, Computer Science, Computer Science with Software Development and Game Design. Postgraduate options include MSc Computer Science and MSc Accounting and Finance.

Game Design is one of the more unusual additions to the initial course list. The university had earlier described it as a first for a UK university campus in India, adding a course that sits at the intersection of technology, entertainment and creative industries.

For Indian students, the biggest attraction is the possibility of accessing an overseas university experience without the full cost and logistics of moving abroad. Students at the Bengaluru campus will follow the University of Liverpool’s curriculum and can also access international opportunities through the university’s wider network. The university says India-based students may spend a semester at its UK campus or transfer there for their final year, subject to the relevant conditions.

The move comes as more international universities look towards India. The National Education Policy 2020 created a framework that encourages internationalisation and greater global collaboration in higher education. Foreign university campuses can give Indian students access to international curricula while also supporting research and industry partnerships within the country.

Bengaluru is a natural location for such a campus. The city is one of India’s biggest technology centres and has a large concentration of companies working in software, artificial intelligence, finance, biotechnology and other technology-driven industries.

The University of Liverpool says its Bengaluru campus will also focus on research and links with employers. Its planned learning spaces are intended to support practical teaching, collaborative projects and interaction with industry. This could be important for students who want their university education to connect directly with the job market.

However, the arrival of an international university also raises an important question about affordability. A foreign university degree in India can still be expensive compared with many domestic options. Students and families will therefore need to weigh the value of an international degree against tuition fees, accommodation and other costs.

The first intake will also be closely watched because there will initially be no long-term placement record for the Bengaluru campus. Students will want to see how effectively the university builds relationships with Indian employers and how its graduates perform after completing their degrees.

Applications for the 2026 intake are already open, with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes scheduled to begin in September 2026 according to the university’s current course listings.

The Bengaluru campus marks a new chapter in India’s higher education landscape. If it succeeds, it could strengthen the case for more international universities to establish full campuses in India and give students more options to earn globally recognised qualifications without leaving the country.
