Article Digital Arrest Scams in India: How Students and Families Can Stay Safe A phone call claiming to be from the police, the Central Bureau of Investigation or another government agency can be frightening, especially when the caller alleges that someone has been involved in a serious crime. Cybercriminals exploit this fear through scams commonly known as digital arrest. They may use video calls, fake identification cards, fabricated documents and threats of arrest to pressure victims into transferring money or revealing confidential information. India's Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has warned about criminals impersonating law-enforcement and government officials. Its advisory explains that scammers may invent allegations involving drugs, money laundering, identity documents or other supposed offences. Cybercrime Portal+1 What is a digital arrest scam? In a typical scam, a victim receives a call from someone claiming to represent a police department, an investigative agency or another authority. The caller may say that the victim's Aadhaar details, bank account or mobile number has been linked to illegal activity. The scammer then creates a sense of urgency. They may threaten immediate arrest, demand secrecy or insist that the victim remain on a video call while the supposed investigation continues. Some criminals use fake uniforms, fabricated official documents or backgrounds designed to resemble a police station. They may demand money under the pretext of verification, security deposits or settling a fabricated case. There is no legal concept of digital arrest under Indian law. A caller cannot make someone legally detained simply by keeping them on a video call. Cybercrime Portal+1 Warning signs to recognise There are several signs that a call may be fraudulent. - The caller threatens immediate arrest unless money is transferred. - They demand bank details, passwords, PINs or one-time passwords. - They insist that you must not speak to your family, lawyer or bank. - They ask you to remain continuously on a video call. - They pressure you to transfer money to an account for supposed verification. - They refuse to let you independently verify their identity through an official channel. Scammers may know some personal details about their targets. That does not prove that they represent a government agency. What should you do if you receive such a call? First, do not panic or transfer money. End the call if you feel threatened, and do not share sensitive financial or identity information. Contact the relevant agency through contact details obtained independently from its official website. Do not rely on a phone number, link or document supplied by the caller. Tell a trusted family member what happened. A second person can help you assess the situation calmly and identify inconsistencies in the caller's story. If money has already been transferred, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to India's cybercrime reporting system. The national cybercrime helpline is 1930, and online complaints can be submitted at cybercrime.gov.in. Quick reporting can help authorities and financial institutions respond, although recovery of money is not guaranteed. Press Information Bureau Preserve call records, messages, payment details and other evidence. Do not delete potentially useful information before recording or reporting it. How can students protect their families? Students can help family members understand common scam tactics, especially if older relatives are less familiar with digital fraud. Explain that legitimate officials should not use threats and secrecy to pressure people into transferring money. Encourage relatives to verify unexpected claims independently and discuss suspicious calls with someone they trust. Families should also use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication where available and avoid clicking suspicious links. The bottom line Digital arrest scams rely on fear, urgency and impersonation. The safest response is to pause, refuse demands for money, verify the caller independently and report suspected fraud quickly. Remember: a threatening video call is not proof of a criminal case. Staying calm and checking the facts can prevent a frightening call from becoming a financial loss.
