NMMSS scholarship deadline extended to September 30, giving students more time to apply

The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27 to September 30, giving eligible students additional time to complete their applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

The original deadline has been extended as the government continues to use the scholarship scheme to support students from economically weaker families and reduce school dropouts after Class VIII. The scheme is designed to encourage meritorious students to continue their education through the secondary and higher secondary stages.

Under the latest schedule, students must submit their applications by September 30, 2026. The deadline for Level 1 verification by Institute Nodal Officers is October 15, while Level 2 verification by District Nodal Officers must be completed by October 31.

The National Scholarship Portal has been open for applications for the 2026-27 academic year since June 1. Students selected for the scheme are required to complete a One-Time Registration (OTR) before submitting their scholarship application.

The latest government data shows that the scheme is already seeing significant participation. As of August 31, 79,398 fresh applications and 1,87,208 renewal applications had been submitted for the 2026-27 cycle.

NMMSS provides financial support to students from economically weaker sections who show academic merit. The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships every year to selected Class IX students, with the scholarship continuing through Classes X to XII subject to the required academic conditions. The scholarship amount is ₹12,000 per year.

The scheme is aimed at students studying in State Government, Government-aided and local body schools. Students must meet the prescribed academic and income requirements. The parental income limit is ₹3.5 lakh per year, while students generally need at least 55% marks in Class VII to appear for the selection test, with a five percentage point relaxation for SC and ST students.

The scholarship is particularly important because financial pressure can influence whether students continue their education after the elementary stage. By providing direct financial assistance, the scheme aims to help students remain in school rather than leaving education early.

The government has also set a target of supporting 1,00,000 Class IX students from economically weaker sections through NMMSS during 2026-27. The official framework also sets targets for continuing beneficiaries in Classes X, XI and XII.

The application process is handled digitally through the National Scholarship Portal, which brings multiple government scholarship services onto one platform. The system also uses verification stages before eligible applications are approved for financial support.

For eligible students, the September 30 extension is therefore more than just an administrative change. It provides another opportunity to complete registration, submit documents and ensure that the application reaches the verification stage on time.

Students who have already submitted their applications should also check that their applications are properly verified by the relevant authorities. The Ministry has advised eligible students to use the extended window rather than waiting until the final days.
