Mumbai Schools Reopen as IMD Downgrades Rain Alert; BMC Withdraws Holiday

Following two days of heavy monsoon rainfall, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have reopened on July 8 after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) downgraded its weather warning from an Orange Alert to a Yellow Alert. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not announced any further extension of the holiday, allowing educational institutions to resume normal operations

Authorities reviewed the city’s weather conditions and flood situation before deciding to reopen schools. While rainfall has reduced, civic agencies remain on alert, with emergency response teams continuing to monitor vulnerable locations, waterlogging and localised flooding across the city.

School administrations have advised students and parents to remain cautious while travelling, particularly in low-lying areas that may still experience waterlogging. Parents are encouraged to check transport updates and school notifications before leaving home, especially if heavy showers resume during the day.

Education experts note that temporary closures during extreme weather help protect students and staff, while timely reopening minimises disruption to academic schedules. Schools are expected to continue monitoring weather advisories and may adjust activities if conditions worsen.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in parts of Mumbai over the coming days. Although the immediate threat has eased, authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during intense showers and follow official weather updates throughout the monsoon season.

The reopening marks a return to normal academic activities after weather-related disruptions. Civic officials have assured that schools will continue functioning unless fresh advisories are issued based on changing weather conditions.
