India’s higher education sector is rapidly embracing artificial intelligence, with universities forging partnerships to prepare students for an economy where AI skills are becoming as important as digital literacy. The latest collaborations between universities and Google signal a wider shift from teaching AI as a niche subject to embedding it across mainstream education.
Invertis University has announced a partnership with Google to become a Google Agentic AI University, integrating Google’s AI ecosystem into teaching, research and faculty development. The initiative aims to provide students with hands on exposure to AI tools, certified learning programmes and practical applications that reflect workplace requirements.
Similarly, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka has partnered with Google to introduce AI learning across its engineering programmes. The collaboration includes curated curriculum, industry focused training and practical modules covering machine learning, data analysis and responsible AI practices.
These developments reflect a broader transformation taking place across India’s education landscape. Rather than limiting AI education to computer science departments, institutions are increasingly treating artificial intelligence as a foundational skill relevant to engineering, management, healthcare, design and other disciplines.
Industry experts have consistently pointed to a widening gap between academic learning and workplace expectations. Employers are looking beyond theoretical knowledge, seeking graduates who can use AI tools to solve real business problems, analyse data and improve productivity. Universities are responding by introducing project based learning, certification programmes and closer engagement with technology companies.
Faculty training has also become a major focus. Many educators require support to integrate AI into classroom teaching, assessment methods and research. By investing in faculty development alongside student programmes, universities are attempting to ensure that AI adoption is sustainable rather than limited to a few specialised courses.
The timing is significant as India continues to strengthen its digital economy. Artificial intelligence is expected to influence sectors ranging from manufacturing and finance to education and healthcare. Graduates entering the workforce will increasingly be expected to understand AI powered tools regardless of their chosen profession.
The move also complements the National Education Policy’s emphasis on multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking and industry aligned education. Universities are recognising that future employability will depend not only on technical expertise but also on the ability to work alongside AI responsibly and ethically.
However, experts caution that successful implementation will depend on more than signing partnership agreements. Institutions will need adequate digital infrastructure, continuous curriculum updates and equal access to learning resources to ensure students across regions benefit from these initiatives. Responsible AI practices, data privacy and ethical decision making will also need to become integral parts of AI education rather than optional discussions.
As more universities adopt similar models, India’s higher education system appears to be entering a new phase where AI is becoming part of everyday learning instead of a specialised elective. For students, this could mean graduating with skills that are more closely aligned with the demands of an increasingly technology driven job market.
