The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified the passing criteria for Class 10 students appearing for the 2027 Board examinations.
Students will need to secure at least 33% marks overall in a subject, combining their internal assessment and external board examination marks.
The clarification removes confusion created by wording in an earlier curriculum document, which appeared to suggest that students would need to secure 33% separately in internal and external assessments.
CBSE has now confirmed that there is no change in the Class 10 passing criteria for the 2026-27 academic session.
What Is the Class 10 Passing Rule?
For Class 10, the required 33% will be calculated by combining internal assessment and external examination marks.
The assessment structure will continue with the existing 80:20 pattern, according to the clarification.
This means a student who performs relatively poorly in the written examination could still meet the passing requirement through the combined score, provided the overall subject total reaches the required threshold.
Why Was There Confusion?
The confusion emerged after the wording of the 2026-27 secondary school curriculum appeared to indicate that students needed to obtain 33% separately in external and internal assessments.
CBSE subsequently clarified that this was not intended to introduce a new passing requirement for the current academic session.
The Board said the passing criteria remain the same as those followed during 2025-26.
What About Class 12?
The rule is different for Class 12.
Students appearing for the Class 12 Board examinations continue to require at least 33% marks separately in internal and external assessments to clear a subject.
Therefore, students and parents should not apply the Class 10 rule to Class 12.
What Students Should Focus On
The clarification should reduce unnecessary anxiety among Class 10 students.
However, students should not interpret the 33% requirement as a target.
The CBSE has already released subject-wise Sample Question Papers and Marking Schemes for the 2026-27 academic session.
These resources provide students with an understanding of the question-paper format, question types, marks distribution and evaluation approach.
Students should therefore use the sample papers alongside the syllabus rather than preparing only around the minimum passing mark.
Board Exam Preparation Is Already Underway
CBSE has also begun the administrative process for the 2027 examinations.
Schools are required to submit the List of Candidates, or LOC, containing details such as students’ names, dates of birth, subjects, photographs and other information.
The regular LOC submission deadline is October 21, 2026, followed by a late-submission period from October 22 to October 30.
For students, the message is straightforward: there is no new 33% separate-component rule for Class 10 in 2027.
The existing combined assessment system continues for the 2026-27 academic year.
