IIT Madras Launches ₹3.30 Crore Construction Robotics Lab With Bechtel India

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has inaugurated a ₹3.30-crore construction robotics laboratory in collaboration with Bechtel India, creating a new platform for students and researchers to work on robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies.

The laboratory, inaugurated on September 22, has been established with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from Bechtel India. Its objective is to connect academic research with practical requirements from the construction and infrastructure industry.

The new facility will focus on construction robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies. Researchers and students will be able to explore real-world construction applications, test emerging technologies and conduct technology demonstrations based on industry requirements.

The partnership between IIT Madras and Bechtel India is also designed to strengthen industry-academia collaboration. Bechtel will contribute industry perspectives to curriculum development, provide mentorship through industry professionals and explore internship opportunities for selected students.

The laboratory is expected to support several forms of research and technology development. These include joint research projects, consulting activities, prototype development and industry demonstrations. Research emerging from the collaboration could also lead to academic publications and patents, according to IIT Madras and the government announcement.

For students, the initiative provides an opportunity to move beyond classroom-based learning and gain exposure to technologies being developed for actual construction applications.

The facility will particularly support students and researchers interested in robotics, automation, engineering, construction technology and deep-tech applications. The institute has said the laboratory will provide training and research opportunities, including for master’s students, while contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in construction robotics.

The laboratory will be led by IIT Madras faculty members Prof. T. Asokan and Prof. Koshy Varghese. The collaboration was formalised through a memorandum of understanding involving IIT Madras faculty and Bechtel India representatives.

The initiative also reflects a broader shift in engineering education, where universities are increasingly connecting academic programmes with industry-specific technologies and practical research requirements.

Construction is a particularly relevant area for this approach because large infrastructure projects require solutions that can improve how complex tasks are planned, monitored and executed. Robotics and automation can become part of this technological ecosystem, while universities can provide environments for research, experimentation and training.

The IIT Madras-Bechtel partnership is planned as a longer-term collaboration, with opportunities for industry-related projects and applications over the coming years.
