Artificial intelligence is becoming a part of everyday life, from search engines and virtual assistants to healthcare and workplaces. Recognising this shift, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), together with the European Union, has introduced a new AI Literacy Framework to help primary and secondary schools prepare students for an AI-driven world. The framework aims to ensure that young learners understand not only how AI works but also how to use it responsibly and ethically.
The framework is designed as a guide for teachers, school leaders and policymakers to integrate AI literacy into classrooms. Rather than treating AI as a separate subject, it encourages schools to include AI concepts across different subjects and everyday learning activities. Students will learn about the opportunities AI offers, its limitations, the importance of critical thinking and the ethical issues surrounding its use.
According to the OECD, AI literacy goes beyond teaching students how to use AI tools. It also focuses on helping learners question AI-generated information, identify bias, understand privacy concerns and make informed decisions when interacting with digital technologies. As AI becomes more common in education and employment, these skills are expected to become as important as digital literacy and problem-solving.
The framework also provides practical classroom examples suitable for different age groups. Education experts believe AI should support learning rather than replace teachers. UNESCO has also urged countries to adopt ethical and human-centred approaches to AI in education, emphasising fairness, inclusion and responsible technology use.
For schools, the framework offers a structured starting point without requiring major curriculum changes. Instead, it promotes gradual integration of AI awareness into existing lessons, helping students develop confidence in using technology while understanding its risks.
