The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has extended the registration window for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, GATE 2027, giving candidates additional time to complete their applications.
According to the revised schedule on the official GATE 2027 website, the extended registration deadline is now October 5, 2026. Candidates can submit applications until the extended deadline with the applicable late fee. The registration process is being conducted through the GATE Online Application Processing System.
The regular registration deadline had previously been scheduled for September 27. The extension provides additional time to students who could not complete their applications within the original window.
GATE is one of India’s major national-level examinations for students seeking admission to postgraduate and doctoral programmes in engineering, technology, science, architecture, humanities and related disciplines.
GATE 2027 also includes an important change in its examination structure. A new Robotics and Automation test paper has been introduced, reflecting the growing academic and industry relevance of robotics, automation and intelligent systems.
The official portal states that GATE 2027 will have 30 test papers. Changes have also been made to certain sectional paper codes and syllabi, making it important for candidates to check the revised information before applying.
The examination is scheduled to be conducted on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027.
GATE scores can be used for admission to postgraduate and doctoral programmes at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education. Several public-sector organisations also use GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes.
The examination therefore has relevance beyond traditional engineering admissions.
For students preparing for GATE, the registration extension provides additional time to verify eligibility, select the appropriate test paper, upload documents and complete the application process.
Candidates should also carefully check the revised syllabus because the official portal has indicated changes for several papers.
The introduction of Robotics and Automation as a new paper is another notable development. The addition reflects how higher education examinations are adapting to emerging technology areas.
However, candidates should not treat the extended deadline as a reason to delay the application process. Application portals can experience heavy traffic close to deadlines, while errors in documents or personal information may require additional time to correct.
Students should therefore complete their applications well before the final date and retain confirmation of successful submission.
GATE 2027 demonstrates how India’s postgraduate entrance ecosystem is continuing to evolve around emerging technologies and changing academic pathways.
For students considering MTech, doctoral study or technical careers, the examination remains an important route into advanced education and research.
