The National Medical Commission has released the NEET PG 2026-27 seat matrix, giving medical graduates updated information about postgraduate seats available across approved institutions. The NMC’s latest notice is dated September 29, 2026, and provides the seat position for the academic year 2026-27.
The seat matrix is an important document for candidates preparing to participate in NEET PG counselling because it shows the postgraduate courses and seats available at participating medical institutions.
Current reports put the total number of seats in the updated matrix at more than 58,000, although published totals differ depending on which categories and courses are included in the count. Candidates should therefore rely on the official NMC matrix and the counselling authority’s final seat position when making choices.
The matrix covers postgraduate medical education across government, private and deemed institutions. It allows candidates to examine the availability of courses such as MD and MS across different colleges and states.
For students, the release is particularly important because seat availability can influence the choices they make during counselling. A candidate’s eventual options depend not only on the total number of seats but also on rank, category, eligibility, domicile rules where applicable, course preference and the counselling rules.
The NMC has also made clear that admissions cannot be conducted beyond the approved number of seats. The commission has asked stakeholders to report discrepancies in the published matrix so that corrections can be considered.
Candidates should therefore avoid relying solely on screenshots, social-media posts or unofficial lists circulating online. The official matrix should be checked before filling preferences.
The release also comes ahead of the next stage of the counselling process. Reports indicate that registration for PwD candidates is scheduled to begin from October 1.
For aspirants, an increase in seats can mean that more postgraduate positions are available compared with an earlier seat position. However, this does not mean that every candidate will automatically have a better chance of securing a preferred speciality. Competition varies considerably between courses, colleges and categories.
Candidates should study the matrix carefully rather than looking only at the headline number. They can compare institutions, specialities and seat categories and then prepare a realistic preference list.
It is also important to remember that the seat matrix can be updated. NMC’s current notice indicates that additional approvals or changes may lead to revisions.
The release therefore marks an important stage in NEET PG 2026 counselling. For medical graduates, the next step is to check the official seat matrix, understand the counselling schedule and make preferences based on their rank, eligibility and career plans.
