UGC-NET June 2026: English, Commerce and Sociology Papers to Be Held Again in September

The UGC-NET June 2026 examination will be conducted again for candidates who appeared for the English, Commerce and Sociology papers, following complaints about errors in the question papers. The Centre informed the Delhi High Court on August 19 that the three affected papers will be re-conducted in September.

According to the schedule submitted before the court, the English and Commerce papers will be held on September 9, while the Sociology paper will be conducted on September 10. The announcement provides affected candidates with a fresh opportunity to take the examination after concerns were raised over the quality and accuracy of the original papers.

The decision follows complaints from candidates who appeared for the June examination. One of the petitions before the Delhi High Court was filed by a candidate who had appeared for the Sociology paper on June 30. The petitioner had sought an independent investigation and a fresh examination, citing concerns about the conduct of the test.

The Centre’s decision means candidates in the three subjects will not have to rely on papers that were questioned during the examination process. The Delhi High Court disposed of the petition after taking note of the Centre’s submission regarding the re-examination.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts UGC-NET on behalf of the University Grants Commission, is responsible for determining eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship, Assistant Professor appointments and certain PhD admissions. The examination is conducted in computer-based test mode and is an important qualification for students planning academic or research careers in Indian universities and colleges.

The re-examination is particularly important for candidates who have invested months preparing for UGC-NET. A fresh test means affected candidates will have another opportunity to demonstrate their performance under a new question paper. It also gives the examination authorities a chance to address concerns over the earlier papers and maintain confidence in the testing process.

The three-subject retest does not mean that the entire June 2026 UGC-NET examination has been cancelled. Reports indicate that the remaining subjects in the examination cycle are not affected by the decision. Candidates who appeared for other subjects will therefore continue under the existing examination process.

The latest development comes at a time when examination agencies are facing increasing scrutiny over the accuracy, reliability and transparency of large-scale competitive examinations. For students, even small errors in a national-level examination can have a significant impact because UGC-NET results can influence applications for research opportunities, teaching positions and doctoral programmes.

Candidates appearing for the retest should closely monitor official NTA communication for details about admit cards, examination centres and other instructions. The official UGC-NET portal currently carries updates relating to the June 2026 examination, including candidate notices and examination information.

The September retest will now be closely watched by candidates, universities and education stakeholders. For the affected students, the priority is clear: prepare again, follow the revised schedule and ensure that they do not miss the second opportunity to appear for the examination.
