AICTE Revises 2026-27 Academic Calendar, Extends Admission Window to September 14

The All India Council for Technical Education has revised the academic calendar for the 2026-27 session, giving students more time to secure admission against vacant seats at approved technical institutions.

Under the revised schedule, admission against notified vacant seats will remain open until 14 September 2026. The same deadline applies to eligible students seeking lateral entry directly into the second year of technical programmes.

The revised calendar applies to AICTE-approved technical institutions and also covers institutions offering executive management programmes such as Postgraduate Diploma in Management and Postgraduate Certificate in Management courses.

The change is important for students who have not yet secured a seat because of the regular admission process or who are looking for available seats after the main counselling rounds.

AICTE has already started the academic session for first-year students. According to the revised calendar, first-year classes at approved technical institutions began on 17 August 2026.

This means students who take admission later will join classes that have already started. Institutions will therefore need to help late-admitted students catch up with the academic work covered before they joined.

The revised schedule follows a recent Supreme Court order and an AICTE circular issued on 13 August, according to reports on the revised calendar.

For students, the extension could provide another opportunity to find a place in an approved college or programme. Vacant seats can arise after students withdraw, change institutions or choose different courses during the admission cycle.

The September 14 deadline also applies to lateral-entry admissions. This route allows eligible diploma holders and other students who meet the relevant requirements to enter the second year of certain technical programmes rather than starting from the first year.

For students who have already started their courses, the revised calendar does not change the fact that first-year classes have begun. Those still seeking admission should therefore act quickly rather than waiting until the final date.

The extension may also help colleges fill vacant seats and begin the academic year with fewer unoccupied places. For students, however, the main benefit is the additional time to secure admission through available seats.

The revised schedule is particularly relevant for engineering, technology and management aspirants who may have missed earlier admission opportunities. It also gives diploma holders considering lateral entry additional time to complete the admission process.
