The Central Board of Secondary Education has sought to calm anxieties among students and parents by confirming that the results for Classes 10 and 12 will be announced on time, despite disruptions at a few examination centres in West Asia.
The board indicated that it is putting in place a calibrated assessment approach for candidates who were unable to appear for some papers. Officials said the evaluation framework will vary depending on the number of examinations a student has completed, with an effort to ensure that no candidate is placed at a disadvantage due to circumstances beyond their control.
While the situation had raised concerns about delays and fairness in assessment, the CBSE’s assurance points to an attempt to preserve both the academic calendar and the credibility of the examination process. The board is understood to be working with schools and regional offices to standardise the criteria and avoid inconsistencies.
The episode once again underlines the growing complexity of administering a centralised examination system across geographies affected by factors outside the education system. How the CBSE balances uniformity with flexibility in this instance will likely set a precedent for similar contingencies in the future.
