The University Grants Commission has urged universities and higher education institutions to accelerate the implementation of the Academic Bank of Credits system as part of the reforms outlined under the National Education Policy 2020.
In a recent communication to institutions, the commission asked universities to ensure that students’ academic credits are uploaded regularly on the Academic Bank of Credits portal. The system allows students to store, transfer and redeem credits earned from different recognised institutions during their academic journey.
Officials said the initiative is intended to support greater flexibility in higher education by enabling students to move across institutions and programmes without losing the credits they have already earned.
Universities have also been asked to sensitise students and faculty members about the functioning of the system and the procedures for credit transfer. Institutions that have not yet fully integrated the platform have been advised to complete the necessary technical and administrative steps at the earliest.
The Academic Bank of Credits is a key component of the credit based and multidisciplinary approach proposed under the National Education Policy, which aims to make India’s higher education system more flexible and student centric.
