New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has asked universities and higher education institutions across the country to give greater attention to student mental health, urging campuses to build support systems that respond to rising stress and anxiety among students.
In a recent advisory, the regulator said institutions should strengthen counselling facilities, promote peer support networks and organise regular awareness programmes on emotional well being. Universities have also been encouraged to integrate mental health initiatives into campus activities so that students can seek help without hesitation.
The commission referred to the pressures faced by students in competitive academic environments and said universities must adopt a proactive approach to address the issue. It recommended that institutions actively use government initiatives such as the Manodarpan programme to provide psychological support and counselling services.
Faculty members and administrative staff have also been asked to remain attentive to signs of distress among students and guide them towards appropriate support mechanisms. The advisory emphasised that a healthy campus environment is essential for meaningful learning and academic success.
The move comes as policymakers increasingly recognise the importance of mental health in the higher education ecosystem, with universities expected to play a central role in building supportive and inclusive learning spaces.
