The Rajasthan government will begin the second phase of its state-wide reading campaign from January 19, building on the response received during the first phase, officials said.
The campaign is part of the state’s efforts to strengthen reading habits among school students, with a focus on improving comprehension, vocabulary, and overall learning outcomes. According to the education department, the second phase will place greater emphasis on regular reading activities inside classrooms, structured reading hours, and wider participation of teachers and school heads.
Under the programme, students will be encouraged to read age-appropriate books, newspapers, and supplementary learning material. Teachers will guide students through reading sessions and track progress, while school administrations will ensure the availability of reading resources in libraries and classrooms.
Officials said the first phase of the campaign recorded encouraging participation across government schools, prompting the decision to scale it up. Feedback collected from schools has been used to fine-tune the second phase, with clearer guidelines for teachers and closer monitoring at the district level.
The education department has directed schools to integrate reading activities into their daily schedules from January 19 onwards. Regular reviews will be conducted to assess student engagement and learning gains during the campaign period.
The state government sees the reading initiative as a key step toward improving foundational learning and academic performance, especially at the primary and upper-primary levels.
