Jaipur reports that the Rajasthan government has launched a special campaign to grant formal land leases to more than 37 000 government schools, a move that authorities say will strengthen property rights and support long-term planning for school infrastructure.
Under the initiative led by the state’s education department, officials will identify and regularise school land records in a phased manner so that schools have clear title to the land they occupy. The campaign is intended to prevent encroachments and facilitate future expansion of facilities such as classrooms, playgrounds, staff quarters and water and sanitation infrastructure.
Education department sources said that lack of formal documentation has long been a challenge for many rural and urban government schools, leading to disputes over ownership and hesitation in investing in infrastructure upgrades. Clear land titles, they argued, will help schools access government schemes, raise community confidence and support better delivery of teaching and learning resources.
The special campaign will involve coordination among revenue officials, local authorities and school administrators, with outreach planned to inform communities about the process and necessary documentation. Authorities are hopeful that the effort will be substantially complete within the current fiscal year.
Education advocates welcomed the move, highlighting that secure land tenure can pave the way for improved facilities and a more stable environment for students and staff alike.
