The declaration of Class 12 results by the Board of Secondary Education Rajasthan on Monday has once again underlined a pattern that has become familiar in recent years. Pass percentages across streams have remained exceptionally high, with Arts and Science both recording figures above 97 percent.
At one level, the numbers signal continuity in academic performance and the system’s ability to ensure that students are not held back in large numbers. The post-pandemic shift towards more student-friendly evaluation methods appears to have stabilised into a norm. Digital access to results has further streamlined the process, reducing uncertainty for lakhs of students awaiting outcomes.
Yet, the consistency of such high pass percentages invites a deeper scrutiny. Educationists have repeatedly pointed to the need for balancing inclusivity with rigour. When results cluster at the higher end, the differentiation between varying levels of student achievement becomes less distinct. This has implications not only for higher education admissions but also for how learning outcomes are measured at the school level.
The larger question is not about the success of students, which must be welcomed, but about the credibility and depth of assessment frameworks. As boards across states continue to recalibrate evaluation patterns in line with policy shifts, including those proposed under the National Education Policy, the emphasis must now move towards ensuring that high scores are matched by demonstrable learning.
For students, the results mark a milestone. For the system, they serve as a reminder that access and excellence must advance together.
