In a significant procedural shift, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has announced that it will introduce on-screen marking for the evaluation of board examination answer sheets beginning in March 2026. The reform, officials say, is aimed at expediting results and enhancing transparency in a system long criticised for delays and opacity.
Under the new mechanism, examiners will assess scanned copies of answer scripts digitally rather than handling physical bundles. Education authorities argue that the move will reduce logistical bottlenecks, minimise the risk of paper loss or tampering, and allow tighter monitoring of evaluation timelines. Built-in moderation tools and digital audit trails are expected to bring greater standardisation to marking practices.
The shift aligns Punjab with a growing number of state boards that have embraced digitised assessment in response to mounting public scrutiny over result delays and re-evaluation disputes. For students, faster result declarations could ease the annual uncertainty that disrupts higher education admission schedules.
Yet, the reform’s success will depend on implementation, examiner training, technical infrastructure and cybersecurity safeguards will prove critical. As board examinations continue to determine academic futures for lakhs of students, the promise of efficiency must be matched by institutional preparedness.
