Private universities expand interdisciplinary courses as demand patterns evolve

Private universities across India are widening their academic offerings, introducing interdisciplinary programmes that combine fields such as technology, business, and the liberal arts. The shift reflects changing student preferences and a growing emphasis on employability in a competitive job market.

Administrators say traditional degree structures are being reworked to allow greater flexibility in course selection, enabling students to build customised academic pathways. This aligns with the broader direction set by the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages multidisciplinary learning.

Courses that integrate data science with economics, or design with entrepreneurship, are seeing particular traction. Universities are also collaborating with industry partners to shape curricula, aiming to ensure that graduates are better prepared for evolving workplace demands.

However, the expansion has raised questions around faculty readiness and infrastructure. Delivering interdisciplinary programmes requires coordination across departments and investment in new teaching capabilities, areas where institutions are still building capacity.

There is also a growing need for clearer regulatory guidelines to ensure consistency in programme quality. While autonomy has enabled innovation, it has also led to variations in how courses are structured and assessed.

Even so, universities appear committed to this shift, viewing it as essential to staying relevant in a changing education landscape. The trend suggests a gradual move away from rigid academic silos towards a more integrated model of higher education.
