Lucknow: Newspaper reading has been made a mandatory daily activity for students studying in Atal Residential Schools, as part of a move to strengthen reading habits, general awareness, and language skills among schoolchildren.
According to officials, students will now be required to read newspapers regularly during designated periods, with teachers guiding discussions on current affairs, vocabulary, and comprehension. The initiative is aimed at improving reading discipline while encouraging students to engage with national and global developments beyond textbooks.
The directive applies to all Atal Residential Schools, which cater primarily to students from economically weaker sections. Education authorities said the measure is intended to support holistic learning by developing critical thinking, communication skills, and familiarity with public issues.
Teachers have been instructed to monitor participation and help students understand news content appropriate to their age and academic level. Schools may also use editorials and explanatory articles as part of classroom discussions to improve analytical skills.
Officials said the move aligns with broader education reforms that emphasise reading, comprehension, and awareness as core learning outcomes. Feedback from schools will be reviewed periodically to assess the impact of the initiative on students’ academic performance and engagement.
