In a move that signals a growing policy focus on climate awareness in school education, the Maharashtra government has decided to introduce a structured climate education programme for students of Classes 8 and 9 studying in government schools across the state.
The initiative, titled Cambridge Climate Quest, is expected to reach nearly two lakh students in its initial phase. The programme will introduce learners to key themes such as climate science, renewable energy, sustainable development, and responsible consumption. Officials say the effort is intended to equip adolescents with a basic understanding of environmental challenges that are increasingly shaping public policy and economic planning.
The curriculum will be delivered through digital learning modules and classroom sessions supported by trained teachers. Education department officials indicated that the material will be available in English and Marathi to ensure wider accessibility for students studying in state-run schools.
The programme will also include activity-based learning. Students will be encouraged to engage with practical topics including energy conservation, waste management, and sustainable lifestyle choices. According to officials involved in the planning, the idea is to move beyond textbook explanations and introduce students to everyday practices that reflect climate-conscious behaviour.
Top-performing students will receive joint certificates issued by Cambridge and the Maharashtra government. The state administration believes such recognition will encourage greater participation and interest among students.
The programme is expected to be rolled out from the upcoming academic session beginning in June 2026. Education authorities view the initiative as part of a broader effort to align school curricula with emerging global concerns such as climate change and environmental sustainability.
Officials also said teacher training workshops will be conducted before the launch to familiarise educators with the programme content and classroom delivery methods.
