The Madhya Pradesh higher education department has approved a programme for state government colleges to roll out certificate courses in 13 Indian languages, aimed at strengthening students’ cultural grasp and broadening their linguistic skills. These courses will initially be offered across autonomous government colleges and Pradhan Mantri Colleges of Excellence in the state.
Under the scheme, students can enrol in language programmes in Kannada, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Telugu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia and Assamese. Each course will involve 60 hours of instruction and carry four academic credits. Participants will have six months to complete the coursework, which will be delivered mainly through online modules supported by optional in-person classes.
A nominal fee of Rs 500 will be levied to cover teaching, assessment and certification costs. No scholarships will be available, but students who do not clear the assessment on the first attempt will have the option to re-enrol. The syllabus for the certificate courses will be prepared by expert committees constituted at individual colleges, drawing on academic models of established institutions.
Administrative duties including online coordination, examination conduct and declaration of results will be handled by designated autonomous colleges acting as nodal centres. The higher education department has indicated that plans are under way to broaden the initiative to include additional colleges, and foreign language offerings may be added in the future based on demand and feedback.
