Kerala’s annual school examination season formally commenced on Thursday with the start of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, one of the largest academic exercises in the state’s education calendar. More than four lakh Class 10 students have registered to appear for the examinations this year, which are being conducted across thousands of centres under the supervision of the state’s General Education Department.
The SSLC examination marks a critical academic milestone for students in Kerala’s public education system, serving as the first major statewide evaluation that determines progression into higher secondary education streams. The examinations began amid extensive logistical preparations by the authorities, who have deployed monitoring mechanisms and supervisory teams to ensure the process proceeds smoothly across districts.
According to officials from the education department, examination centres have been equipped with strict invigilation protocols and digital monitoring mechanisms to maintain transparency and prevent malpractice. Students were required to report early to centres as entry gates closed well before the commencement of the examination session.
The launch of the SSLC examinations also coincides with the start of the Plus One (Class 11) examinations, which began on the same day, creating a simultaneous examination cycle across different levels of the state’s secondary education system. Meanwhile, the Plus Two (Class 12) examinations are scheduled to begin shortly, extending Kerala’s examination period through the coming weeks.
Authorities have repeatedly urged students to approach the examinations with confidence rather than stress. Officials emphasised that the SSLC exam should be seen as an opportunity for students to demonstrate learning accumulated over several years of schooling, rather than as a high-pressure test.
Kerala’s education system has historically recorded some of the highest pass percentages and literacy outcomes in the country, and the SSLC results are often closely watched as a barometer of the state’s school education performance. Over the past few years, the state has also introduced incremental reforms in assessment patterns, teacher training and digital learning infrastructure to strengthen outcomes at the secondary level.
With the examination cycle now underway, the state government expects the process to run smoothly across districts, while results are likely to be declared after the evaluation process is completed in the coming months. The outcome will determine the academic trajectory of lakhs of students as they move into higher secondary streams and vocational pathways within Kerala’s education system.
