The Karnataka government is considering a policy that could restrict or ban the use of mobile phones and social media platforms by children under the age of 16 as part of a broader effort to tackle rising digital addiction and its impact on young learners. Officials said the issue remains under discussion and that a final decision will be taken only after extensive consultations with students, parents, educators and subject experts.
Speaking at an event in Bengaluru, the School Education and Literacy Minister highlighted concerns that excessive mobile use is distracting students from studies and contributing to unhealthy habits among children. The proposed initiative reflects growing unease about digital exposure among minors, with authorities pointing to trends observed nationwide rather than only within Karnataka.
The government is planning an awareness campaign under the slogan Put down the mobile, pick up a book to encourage reading and reduce screen time. The chief minister has directed officials to gather feedback from all stakeholders before finalising any regulatory framework.
While no formal policy has been announced, the proposal has triggered debate among educators and parents on balancing the benefits of technology in learning with the need to protect children’s well-being and academic focus.
