The Karnataka government has directed all pre-university colleges in the state to adopt stronger child protection measures, following concerns over cases involving teenage pregnancies, sexual offences and online exploitation among students.
The directive has been issued by the Department of School Education and Literacy, which has asked institutions to implement recommendations related to student safety and welfare. Authorities said the move is aimed at strengthening safeguards for adolescents studying in Classes 11 and 12.
Under the new instructions, colleges will be required to form child protection committees and appoint trained counsellors to address issues related to student wellbeing. Institutions have also been asked to conduct awareness sessions on topics such as legal rights, personal safety, digital behaviour and mental health.
Officials indicated that the initiative seeks to ensure that colleges remain alert to early signs of distress among students and provide timely support. Confidential grievance systems are also expected to be established so that students can report concerns without fear or hesitation.
The government has emphasised the role of teachers and administrators in creating a supportive environment on campus. Staff members will be encouraged to identify and report situations where students may require counselling or protection.
The directive comes amid growing concern about the vulnerability of adolescents to online risks and social pressures. Education authorities believe that strengthening institutional mechanisms within colleges will help create a safer and more responsive learning environment.
Colleges across the state have been asked to ensure compliance with the guidelines and incorporate child protection practices into their regular administrative and academic processes.
