Gujarat has formally opened its admission process for undergraduate engineering programmes, placing more than 78,000 seats across government, grant-in-aid and private institutions on offer from April 1. The admissions will be conducted through a centralised process, with merit lists prepared on the basis of scores from GUJCET and JEE 2026.
The scale of intake reflects the state’s continued emphasis on expanding technical education capacity, even as questions persist over seat utilisation in certain private colleges. Officials indicated that an additional 2,500 seats in government institutions may be introduced this year, a move likely aimed at strengthening access to subsidised education.
At the same time, half of the seats in private colleges will remain under the management quota, a provision that often draws scrutiny for its lack of transparency and potential to distort merit-based allocation.
The application window will remain open until May 31, giving students a two-month period to navigate the process. For many aspirants, the coming weeks will be decisive, not only in terms of securing a seat but also in determining the balance between affordability and institutional quality in a rapidly expanding higher education landscape.
