The Union government has approved an outlay of ₹300 crore for the construction and repair of school buildings in Rajasthan, in a move aimed at addressing long-pending gaps in basic infrastructure. The allocation is expected to target dilapidated structures, many of which have raised safety concerns, particularly in rural and remote districts.
Officials indicated that the funds will be channelled towards rebuilding unsafe classrooms, strengthening existing facilities and improving essential amenities. The intervention comes against the backdrop of repeated assessments that have flagged the condition of government school buildings as a constraint on both enrolment and retention, especially at the elementary level.
For Rajasthan, where a significant share of students continues to rely on public schooling, infrastructure upgrades remain central to improving learning conditions. Poorly maintained buildings, inadequate classrooms and limited facilities have often disrupted teaching schedules and, in some cases, forced schools to operate in shared or temporary spaces.
The latest approval reflects a broader policy emphasis on linking infrastructure with learning outcomes. While states have expanded enrolment over the years, the quality of physical infrastructure has not kept pace. The challenge now lies in timely execution, with the effectiveness of the allocation likely to be judged not by announcements but by visible improvements on the ground ahead of the next academic cycle.
