The Central Board of Secondary Education has initiated the process for its proposed Class 10 second examination, signalling a shift towards a more flexible assessment system aligned with the National Education Policy. Schools have been directed to submit the list of eligible candidates by March 31 for the supplementary round scheduled later this year.
The second examination will allow students to reappear in up to three subjects in a bid to improve their scores. The move is being positioned as an opportunity to reduce the high-stakes nature of a single annual board exam, while offering students a structured chance at academic recovery without losing a full academic year.
School authorities have been tasked with verifying student details and ensuring timely submission of data through the board’s official portal. The responsibility placed on institutions reflects the board’s attempt to streamline logistics for what is expected to be a large pool of applicants.
While the reform has been broadly welcomed, some educators have raised concerns about the operational burden and the need for clear guidelines on evaluation timelines and result declaration. Students, on the other hand, view the additional attempt as a practical relief, particularly in a system where marginal differences in marks can influence future academic choices.
With the deadline approaching, schools across the country are working to compile and submit candidate information, marking the first step in the rollout of a policy that could gradually reshape board examination practices in India.
