The Bihar government has earmarked Rs 68,216 crore for the education sector in the 2026–27 financial year, marking one of its largest annual allocations for the department. The provision was announced as part of the state budget presented in the Assembly, underlining education as a central pillar of public spending.
Officials said the allocation will be spread across school education, higher education and allied programmes. A substantial share is expected to go towards strengthening government schools through improved infrastructure, classroom facilities and learning resources. Teacher-related spending, including recruitment, training and service-related commitments, also forms a key component of the outlay.
The budget places emphasis on expanding access to education in rural and underserved areas, with funds proposed for new school buildings, upgrades to existing campuses and support for hostels and scholarships. Digital learning initiatives and skill-linked education programmes are also slated to receive budgetary support, aimed at improving learning outcomes and employability.
Higher education institutions in the state are set to benefit through allocations for universities and colleges, including spending on academic facilities and student support schemes. The government indicated that the increased spending is intended to address long-standing gaps in infrastructure and manpower while keeping pace with rising enrolments.
With this allocation, the state aims to consolidate recent gains in enrolment and retention, while shifting attention towards quality, teacher availability and modern learning facilities. The education budget is expected to play a significant role in shaping the state’s social sector priorities in the coming fiscal year.
