Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has taken a significant step to strengthen mental health support for its students by approving the recruitment of contractual psychological counsellors at its student counselling centre, “Umeed”. The decision was made to help students manage academic stress, exam-related pressure and personal concerns with confidential professional assistance.
Under the new arrangement, students will be able to access expert counselling twice weekly for three hours per session at the ‘Umeed’ centre. The university has framed this initiative in line with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises mental health services for learners across higher education institutions.
University spokesperson Rachna Gangwar said the move reflects the institution’s commitment to students’ emotional wellbeing and resilience. It is expected to support confidence building and help students tackle personal and academic challenges more effectively.
In addition to one-on-one counselling, BBAU plans to conduct awareness programmes on mental health issues for its student community. The services will be offered in a strictly confidential manner and focus on issues such as examination stress, career confusion and personal problems.
Interviews for the counselling positions were held recently. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of two years relevant experience, a master’s degree in psychology or related mental health discipline, and a postgraduate diploma in counselling or similar qualification.
The move follows long-standing calls from experts for more accessible mental health support in educational settings, where academic pressure and personal stress factors often affect student performance and overall wellbeing.
If you need to refer students for counselling or stay updated on appointment procedures, the university’s Student Counselling Centre provides details on how to register and access services.
