The government of Uttar Pradesh is set to introduce a dedicated art education textbook titled Bansuri for primary school students, marking a shift towards integrating creative subjects into the formal curriculum. The book will be implemented for Classes 3 and 4 in government schools from the current academic session.
Officials said the initiative has been designed in line with the national curriculum framework, with the aim of strengthening experiential and activity-based learning at the foundational stage. The move is expected to address the gap in structured art education, which has traditionally received limited focus in school systems.
The Bansuri textbook will serve as a comprehensive resource for students to explore various forms of creative expression, while also supporting teachers in delivering structured lessons in art and culture.
Curriculum to include music, dance and theatre with activity-based evaluation
The content of the textbook covers a range of creative disciplines, including visual arts, music, dance, theatre and body movement. Students will participate in activities such as drawing, painting, singing and role play, enabling them to engage with learning beyond conventional classroom methods.
The book also incorporates QR codes to provide access to digital content, allowing students to interact with audio-visual material and enhance their understanding of different art forms. Classes are expected to be conducted multiple times a week, with a focus on participation and creativity rather than written examinations.
Education experts have noted that such initiatives are essential for promoting holistic development among students. By encouraging self-expression and imagination at an early stage, the programme aims to build confidence and critical thinking skills.
Authorities believe that integrating art into the curriculum will not only make classrooms more engaging but also support the overall development of students. The introduction of Bansuri reflects a broader effort to move beyond rote learning and adopt a more balanced approach to education that values both academic and creative growth.
