The All India Council for Technical Education announced that admissions to technical education programs will now be conducted twice annually, a shift intended to address persistent vacancies in engineering colleges. The revised schedule applies to both government and self-financed institutions in the state.
According to the notification, the current round will cover nearly 21,000 unfilled seats in degree engineering courses across Gujarat. Of these, 326 seats in government engineering colleges will be filled through an in-person counseling process overseen by the admissions committee.
Students seeking admission to government colleges must submit applications and supporting documents by January 10. After scrutiny, a merit list will be released on January 16, followed by face-to-face counseling for seat allotment. The entire process is expected to conclude by January 19. Detailed counseling schedules, including reporting times and candidate order, will be published alongside the merit list.
Admissions to self-financed engineering colleges will follow a separate pathway. Institutions will be permitted to admit students directly against vacant seats during the same timeframe, and no centralized counseling will be conducted for these colleges.
Officials said the decision aligns with similar steps taken by state and national education boards to introduce multiple admission cycles within an academic year. Acting on AICTE’s directive, Gujarat’s admissions committee had earlier approved a second round of admissions for engineering disciplines where more than 30 percent of seats remained vacant after the first round.
Education administrators say the revised system is intended to improve seat utilization and provide additional opportunities for students who were unable to secure admission during the initial cycle.
